Aubrey Bates of Protem Nursing Home, Moncton passed away at his residence on Monday, January 1, 2018. Born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late James Wilfred and Elizabeth (MacSween) Bates.
He is survived by his cherished wife of 64 years, Audrey Bates (nee Aucoin), beloved children Anita, Larry (Alyson), Linda (Eric), Mary (Jacek) and Ron (Kristina), and much-loved grandchildren Alana, Kristen, Claire, Elizabeth, Michael, Andrew, Mark, Alex, Cameron, Hayley, Katie, Andrew, and great-grandchildren Nathan, Brody, and Malcolm. Besides his parents he was predeceased by sister Anita, and brothers Wilfrid and Ronald.
He was a wonderful, loving man who was devoted to his family. Aubrey graduated from St. Francis Xavier and the Technical University of Nova Scotia as a civil engineer in 1952 and worked in a number of management roles for the Canadian National Railroad and VIA Rail until his retirement in 1990.
He joined Audrey in representing both Moncton’s Centennial Lawn Bowling Club and the province of New Brunswick at Atlantic and national lawn bowling championships. A friend to many, Aubrey was also an avid bridge player, curler, and golfer.
Visitation will be held at Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine Rd., Riverview (869-2007) on Friday from 3:00-5:00pm, with parish prayers taking place at 4:30pm. Mass of Christian burial will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Moncton on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 11:00am with Father Phil Mulligan presiding.
Donations in Aubrey's memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick.
