Sterling E. Matchett


Sterling Edward Matchett, 91, of Moncton, NB and formerly of Newcastle, NB peacefully passed away with his family at his side on May 4, 2018. He was the son of the late Edward and Mathilda (Breau) Matchett. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen Matchett (Horsman) of Spencer’s Nursing Home. He joined CN as a mechanist and ended his career as a General Forman with 43 years of service. Sterling was an active member of St. Philip’s Anglican Church serving as a lay reader, former Sunday School Superintendent, Treasurer and he also served on the Vestry. Sterling was a Member, Chaplain and Past Master of Keith Lodge #23 F. & A.M., member of the CN Pensioners as well as a former member of the Army Reserves. Survived by sons, Ronald (Debbie), Gregory, Glen (Marilyn); grandchildren, Matthew (Cheryl), Trevor, Sean, Caitlyn, Zachary and Moriah. great grandson, Soren; special nephew, Bill Horsman and his family and daughter in law, Linda Mason, as well as several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Sterling is also survived by two brothers and a sister, Traven Matchett of Mississauga, ON and Rae Matchett (Janet) of Moncton, NB, and his sister Isabelle Gauthier (Noel) of Edmonton, AB. Predeceased by his mother and father as well as two brothers, Kenneth (Yvonne) and Malcolm. Special thanks to Spencer Nursing Home for their care and kindness over the past few years, and to The Moncton Hospital staff for their support while he was a patient. Also, to Father Chris VanBuskirk, Father Kevin Borthwick, Deacon David Alston and Rev. Greg Sparkes for their many visits and support. Resting at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, with a Masonic Service taking place at 6:45pm. A service to celebrate and honour Sterling’s life will be held at St. Philip’s Anglican Church (Lynch St.) on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 11:00 am. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will be held in Fair Haven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sterling’s memory may be made to The Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation or a charity of the donors’ choice.
